Prokera Treatment

What is an amniotic membrane?

Our office currently utilizes the PROKERA brand of membranes which is a versatile treatment option that stimulates regeneration and healing of the surface of the eye. It also doubles as a protective barrier that covers the cornea as it heals. Made with amniotic membrane, it is recognized by the FDA for reducing inflammation and minimizing corneal scarring associated with various ocular surface diseases.

These membranes sit on the eye the same way a contact lens would, except it is slightly larger and thicker than most contact lenses and has a thin layer of amniotic membrane where the lens would be. It is designed to keep moisture in and irritants out, and serves as a protective layer over the cornea to ensure it can heal without further damage from the environment.

What does PROKERA treat?

PROKERA is used to treat several more conditions that affect the cornea, such as corneal ulcers, chemical burns, abrasions and exposure keratitis. The donor tissue for Prokera goes under rigorous testing and quality control to ensure its safety. As such, it delivers an effective, minimally invasive treatment to eye conditions of minor and moderate severity.

What Else Should I Know?

The treatment period typically lasts between 3-5 days, and a follow up appointment will be scheduled to check the progress of the treatment and to remove the device. Some patients experience discomfort, which is caused by a foreign body sensation, but it is not painful. Because it is not fully transparent, expect your vision to be somewhat cloudy during treatment. Contact us right away if you have increased discomfort or if you have any other problems associated with the procedure.
