Back-to-School Vision
This school year will definitely look a little different for our children. With the ongoing pandemic, many parents and children are opting for a virtual school option. Because both online and in-person schooling require optimal vision correction and efficiency for a successful year, your child’s annual vision exam should be a top priority.
Over 75% of learning is attributed to our visual system, and it is estimated that 1 in 4 children have a vision problem. A comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist not only evaluates visual acuity (20/20 vision) to obtain an accurate glasses prescription, but your eye care provider will also analyze how the eyes work together. An efficient binocular visual system will help relieve eyestrain, fatigue, or possibly even double vision - all of which can greatly reduce learning potential.
While digital device usage may increase during this school year, eye doctors advise taking frequent breaks. The 20-20-20 Rule says to look 20 feet away from the screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. And remember to blink!
Set the screens to night-mode, if possible, to reduce the amount of blue light emission. Studies have shown this high energy wavelength can cause eyestrain and interfere with sleeping patterns.
New lens technology is always being developed, as well. Anti-reflective coating, tints and polycarbonate material would all be beneficial for a child.
Stay proactive in your child’s vision development and ocular health by maintaining regular eye examinations! Schedule your appointment today.
