Contact Use and Eye Conditions

Contact lenses provide many benefits to wearers worldwide, but there are some risks if not used correctly. Most conditions can be treated by your optometrist if treatment is started quickly, but more serious disorders can lead to ulcers and potentially permanent vision loss.

Keratitis is the most common eye disorder caused by contact usage; it occurs when the cornea becomes inflamed.

Common symptoms of contact lens related red eyes include:

  • Painful eyes, even after the contact is removed

  • Irritated, red eyes

  • Blurry vision

  • Light sensitivity

  • Watery eyes or discharge

  • Foreign body sensation

To protect your eyes from contact related eye infections, there are some important steps you can take. Always wash your hands before you touch your contacts. Replace contacts per approved brand replacement schedule. If you wear daily disposable contacts, throw them away daily- do not try to extend use beyond what is recommended. Never sleep in your contact lenses. Give your eyes a break from contacts from time to time. Clean your lenses in store-bought solution that is recommended by your optometrist.

It is important to have a pair of glasses with an updated prescription so you can rest your eyes, and carry them with you in case you need to take your contacts out.
