What is a Refraction?

A refraction test is a crucial part of an eye exam that helps determine the appropriate prescription for correcting refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During a refraction, the eye care provider uses a phoropter to measure how light is being refracted and focused by your eyes to help determine the best glasses or contact lens correction for you.

During the test, you will be asked to look through a phoropter and focus on an eye chart. It is painless and typically takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. The eye care provider will present a series of lens choices and ask you which ones make the chart appear clearer. Based on your responses, they can determine the lens power needed to correct your vision.

A refraction test helps you to see the world as best as possible.  If you have noticed changes in your vision or have not had a recent eye exam, scheduling a comprehensive exam with an eye care professional is recommended to maintain good eye health and optimal visual acuity.
