When do I seek emergency eye care?

Did you know we see patients for emergency visits?

Due to specialized instruments needed to evaluate our eyes, an emergency room or urgent care facility may not be best equipped to manage and treat ocular emergency issues. Emergency eye care involves medical management to treat injuries, damage, illnesses and conditions that can risk causing permanent harm to one's eyesight.

No matter how prepared you are, there is always the chance for an ocular emergency to occur, making it necessary to understand the signs, just in case. Some of the more common signs associated with an eye emergency include:

  • Pain

  • Blurred vision

  • Seeing flashes of light

  • A loss of peripheral vision

  • A sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes

  • Redness or swelling in the eyes or eyelids

  • A foreign object in your eye- you might experience pain, pressure or discomfort, a sensation that something is in your eye, extreme watering, or light sensitivity

Anyone currently experiencing one or several of these signs should call us at 231-723-9911 right away. If you call us during normal hours, we will schedule you for a medical visit as quickly as possible. If you call outside of normal hours, follow the prompts on our voicemail and our on-call provider will call you back as soon as we can.
